Ride Jotunheimen, Valdresflye and Peer Gynt Road
This is truly a gem of a mountain adventure, and one that can be enjoyed over two to three days depending on your preferred pace and how much you want to explore.
Along Valdresflye Scenic Route, Jotunheimvegen, and Peer Gynt Road, you'll find plenty of accommodation options—whether you prefer wild camping or traditional mountain hotels. The area also offers almost endless opportunities for hiking, trekking, and summit trips on foot.
Start by taking Ring 3 / E18 towards Sandvika.
Take the exit towards the E16 Bergen route.
Follow the E16 to Hønefoss. After Hønefoss, you can either continue on the E16 all the way to Fagernes, or choose the much more scenic alternative through Vestre Ådal. Follow the western side of the Ådalselva River up to Killingstrømmen at the southern end of Lake Sperillen, where you rejoin the E16.
In Fagernes, it is a good idea to fill up your fuel tank or charge your electric vehicle, as there are limited opportunities to do so further along the route.
From here, take County Road 51 (FV51) towards Beitostølen, following the spectacular Valdresflye Scenic Route.
At Synshorn, turn right onto Jotunheimvegen and follow this road to Skåbu. Along this stretch, you will find many beautiful places suitable for tent camping and rooftop-tent stays.
Shortly after Skåbu, turn right onto Road 255 towards Espedal.
Follow this road to Dalseter Mountain Hotel, where you will find signs directing you onto Peer Gynt Road.
Continue along Peer Gynt Road, passing Fefor Mountain Hotel, Gålå, and Skei.
After Skei, take Road 254 towards Segalstad, continue to Jørstadmoen, and eventually join the E6 southbound towards Gjøvik.
From Gjøvik, take National Road 4 (RV4) and follow it back towards Oslo.
Between Roa and Nittedal, we recommend taking the more rural and scenic Hadelandsvegen (through Harestua) and Gamlevegen (over Grønnvoll) rather than staying on RV4.
The complete route covers approximately 600 kilometres (around 370 miles) and takes just under ten hours of driving, with opportunities to shorten the journey along the way.
Please note that mountain weather and road conditions can be challenging. The route includes gravel roads and is best suited for experienced drivers. Check the weather forecast and road conditions if you are travelling early or late in the season.
