Ride the Oslo Fjord
There are plenty of great places to explore around the Oslofjord. These routes are perfect for an afternoon drive, but they also lend themselves well to an overnight stay in a tent or hotel.
Eastern Shore
The stretch of Gamle Mossevei between Hvervenbukta and Hjulet is a legendary 10-kilometre road, popular with motorcyclists, driving enthusiasts, cyclists, and roller skiers alike. Along the way you'll also find Tyrigrava Kro, a well-known meeting place for automotive enthusiasts, hosting regular themed gatherings throughout the week.
For an even more enjoyable drive, take the detour via Svartskog and Bekkensten. You'll be rewarded with an additional five kilometres of scenic country roads, beautiful fjord views, and the opportunity to visit polar explorer Roald Amundsen's former home, as well as the charming café Svartskog Kolonial. See the route on Google Maps here.
From Hjulet, you can continue onto the Nesodden Peninsula and drive the full loop around this beautiful peninsula. The circuit is approximately 50 kilometres from Hjulet. See the route on Google Maps here.
If you'd like to continue farther south along the coast, we recommend driving via Drøbak, Hvitsten, and Son. Along the route you'll find plenty of opportunities to stop for lunch, dinner, or an overnight stay at one of the area's hotels. For the most enjoyable drive, stick to the smaller local roads and avoid the E6 motorway. On your return from Son, consider heading inland through Indre Østfold and Ytre Enebakk, following Garderveien and Kroerveien back towards Oslo. See the route on Google Maps here.
Western Shore – The Hurum Peninsula
On the western side of the Oslofjord, we highly recommend driving around the Hurum Peninsula. If you'd like to make the most of the sunshine and coastal views, the route is best driven counter-clockwise.
Leave Oslo on the E18, then take Exit 18 (County Road 165) towards Holmen. Depending on traffic, this first section takes just over an hour. From Holmen, the truly scenic part of the drive begins.
From Holmen, follow County Road 165 through Vollen and Slemmestad.
Shortly after Slemmestad, turn left onto Sundbyveien towards Nærsnes and Båtstø.
Then turn left again onto Hurumveien, passing through Åros and Sætre.
After Sætre, continue straight ahead along Søndre Sætrevei and County Road 281 towards Storsand and Tofte.
Just beyond Tofte you'll pass the idyllic Preisserstranda, an excellent spot to stop for a refreshing swim on a warm day.
Continue along County Road 281 to Klokkarstua. From here, you have the option of taking the ferry across to Svelvik, which also offers several excellent driving routes of its own—though that's a story for another guide.
From Klokkarstua, continue along Grimsrudveien towards Hyggen and Gullhaug. From Gullhaug, you can either return directly to Oslo via the E18 (around 40 minutes), or cross the peninsula through Røyken and Heggedal if you're still in the mood for more winding country roads.
Finish the journey by following the E18 back towards Oslo and Ring 3 to Økern
